Did you know that we have more than 5 vowels? We actually have 17 vowels! Most of us know the short vowels a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes w, y. Our long vowels are ae, ee, ie, oe, ue. Other vowels...(o, au, aw)(oo) as in book and (oo) as in moon, (er, ir, ur), (ar), (or) We also have buddy vowels, they are (ou, ow), (oi, oy). Students who spot the vowels in a word, read up to the vowel and then read the whole word are using decoding skills.
